Freddie main Assistant Head Pupil Support & Head of PSHE
I have worked at Merchiston serving in many different roles since 2001. A Design & Technology teacher by trade, I have also delivered Electronics, IT and PSHE, which I currently lead. I served as Head of Design & Technology and also as Housemaster in Chalmers East before taking on my current post as Assistant Head Pupil Support. I have coached rugby throughout my time here and have worked with every A-team in the school as well as many others.
One of the main aspects that makes Merchiston special for me are the relationships that are forged between teachers, pupils and parents. Because we wear so many hats and have the opportunity to see the pupils in many different roles we get to know each other better as people and have more opportunities to build trust and respect, which I believe leads us to helping everyone exceed their own expectations.
I am passionate about instilling positive values in young people, helping them to develop confidence, kindness and happiness in their lives so they are best equipped to make a positive difference in the world.
Rugby has been one my great interests over the years and I have enjoyed playing and coaching from an early age. I am passionate about using my skills in the sport to help young people become good people and to instill positive values that they will use on and off the field. Touch (highlights include playing for Scotland at the European Championships in 2018 and at the World Cup in 2019). I also enjoy designing and making products.
Winning the Scottish Cup as significant underdogs in 2014 was a real highlight as it was the team values that the players bought into that facilitated the opportunity. The players kept the ball for 7 minutes after the clock ran out and scored with the final play to secure a 25-24 victory: they made no excuses and would not lie down.
I am also very proud to have led the Design & Technology department to be recognised as ‘Sector leading’ by HMIE in 2014 and also for us to be recognised by the Technology Teacher’s Association in 2015 with an award for consistent excellence.
