Lesley mcdiarmid History and Politics Teacher & Head of Careers
I joined Merchiston in 2013, becoming the first female member of staff to teach in the History and Politics Department. Since then, I have taught History in every year group from Form 1 but most of my time has been spent teaching boys studying A level History or Politics in our Sixth Form classes. I was additionally appointed to the role of Head of Careers in September 2019.
It is the boys that make Merchiston such an enjoyable school to teach at. They are cheerful and friendly, they are interested in ideas and enjoy a lively, good natured debate, something that is very much encouraged in the History and Politics department!
I have a keen interest in current affairs
I enjoy eating quality food and have a particular love for cheese
When I am not catching up with the day’s political events, I play cards and board games with my family
In 2014 I had the pleasure of joining Mr Newham in accompanying our Sixth Form Politics students to the Big, Big (Scottish Referendum) Debate held at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro where the boys took part in questioning a panel of politicians from both sides of the debate. The trip was a particularly memorable one due to the positive engagement of the boys throughout. They remained good humored until the end, despite an unexpectedly long return journey by public transport!
