Michael Raikes Housemaster, Teacher of Geography and Physical Education
Previous to my time at Merchiston, I spent three years abroad in Kenya teaching at an independent prep school, Pembroke House. I was employed initially as a Cricket Coach, but very quickly moved into a permanent Head of Boys Games and teacher of Geography role, alongside this I was a house tutor in the boarding house which accommodated 100 boys – an experience to say the least!
I joined Merchiston as Director of Junior Sport and teacher of Geography and PE back in 2014 and very quickly felt at home working in the junior boarding house, Pringle. From here I ran the junior sport and activity programmes alongside being a resident house tutor for the next six years, leading to my appointment as Housemaster of Evans and then Laidlaw North.
My wife, Emily and our son, Rhuaridh live here on site – it is a fantastic place to live and bring up a young family, as we are one of a number of young families here at Merchiston. There is a real sense of community throughout term time, but especially in the holiday breaks where we can enjoy each others company and our fantastic school grounds.
I am an all-round sports lover! With my main passions from a playing point of view, being Cricket and Rugby, but in recent years with a continuously broken body, I 100% have got the golfing bug! Saying that, I am a proud member of our staff cricket side, ‘The Sages’, and enjoy the occasional run-out against our senior leavers in the Staff Touch Rugby side.
Another passion would be in my cooking. I love being in the kitchen and entertaining and trying to expand my culinary knowledge and repertoire. Still a way to go yet!
I am proud to say that I am still unbeaten in the House Pool and Table Tennis competitions. No one has yet to come close. The PE dept. have enjoyed continuous success in Volleyball, of which I am a very proud member of the squad – we annually beat the UVI A-Level and Higher PE classes.
