paul Nicholls Head of Physics & Electronics, Head of Science
I came to Merchiston in 2002 and have been incredibly fortunate to live on site, initially in the Cedars and latterly in the Green, overlooking the splendid pitches. It is always a pleasure to see the boys enjoying the facilities throughout the changing seasons, especially as the grounds are so well maintained.
Over the years I have taught Physics, Electronics and Junior Science and have run the Engineering club, Science club and been Master in charge of Sailing. The Engineering activities have achieved some notable successes visiting national finals and winning may robotics competitions. Pastorally I was a tutor in Pringle, Rogerson and am now in Laidlaw - all of these roles have been brilliant in their own unique way.
Merchiston was a great place for my own boys to come to school and, now that they have all moved on to university and beyond, it is clear that they each gained a tremendous amount from being at the school; although it is much more than just a school of course.
I enjoy engineering projects such as restoring and running classic cars and developing my own HiFi system, and on the back of this I have a natural interest in sound and lighting in the theatre.
Sailing has been a great interest throughout my years at Merchiston.
I like to travel taking numerous road trips in the summer holidays and visiting host countries with the British Physics Olympiad team.
My greatest achievement is my continued involvement in the British Physics Olympiad.
