Richard McCorkell Maths Teacher & Master in Charge of Hockey
I joined Merchiston after my first year of teaching and have been at the school for seven years. Time flies so quickly! I teach Maths but have been a tutor in Pringle House, Assistant Housemaster in Chalmers West and now Evans Housemaster so I have seen many different parts of the school.
Alongside this I am MiC Hockey and have seen the sport grow a lot in the past few years – helped by the Astro which we got a few years ago. In my first year at the school we played two Senior fixtures and one U15 fixture. We now have fixtures for U9, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 1st XI teams so the progress has been exciting.
Merchiston is special because it is a small school which means I get to know all of the boys through both teaching and cocurricular sessions. As a teacher I love the number of different opportunities that the boys have to try new things, whatever their interest. The Common Room is also a great place to be – colleagues at the school really do know each other and look out for each other in the course of the busy terms.
I enjoy playing hockey and cricket when I can although I seem to be picking up more injuries than I used to.
I have recently acquired an allotment so I am attempting to grow lots of my own fruit and veg this year – success not guaranteed.
Perhaps my greatest achievement to date was the goal I scored in the Staff v Leavers football match circa 2016 on the old back football pitch. A jink of the hips, a drop of the shoulder and a left(!!) footed strike sailed into the top corner in front of a stunned set of staff and pupils.
