Forest Nursery

Set within Merchiston’s 100-acre campus, the Forest Nursery offers a rare and richly diverse outdoor learning environment in the heart of Edinburgh.

Children explore a landscape shaped by an exceptional variety of trees, including cherry, oak, eucalyptus, sycamore, pine, horse chestnut, maple and lime, creating a changing, seasonal backdrop for learning throughout the year. The campus is recognised for its remarkable biodiversity, with one of the most varied tree collections in the city, second only to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburg

This natural setting is home to a wide range of wildlife. Children may encounter deer, foxes and badgers, observe birds and bats, or discover insects, butterflies and bees within the Forest’s thriving ecosystem.

Access to a pond and the nearby Water of Leith further enriches the experience, supporting water-based exploration and an early understanding of natural habitats.

Each session begins at base camp, where children gather to share ideas and set the tone for the day. From the outset, they are encouraged to take an active role, helping to prepare their environment and engaging with the space around them

The day unfolds through a balance of structured and child-led activities, including:

  • Exploring local wildlife and natural habitats
  • Creative projects using natural materials
  • Climbing, balancing and physical play
  • Campfire activities and simple outdoor cooking
  • Seasonal foraging and environmental learning
  • Water-based exploration in a safe, supervised setting
  • Storytelling, imaginative play and group games

Shared snack times provide opportunities to build social skills, while regular moments of reflection help children develop communication and confidence.

Even in colder weather, the experience remains engaging and supportive, with sheltered spaces, warm drinks and alternative outdoor learning environments

At the Forest Nursery, learning is active, practical and rooted in real experience. Children develop early skills in communication, collaboration and problem-solving, while building resilience and a strong sense of independence

The outdoor setting encourages curiosity and creativity, allowing each child to learn at their own pace in an environment that feels both stimulating and secure.
