Top 100 Cricket Schools for 2019
22nd November, 2018
We are delighted to announce that Merchiston has been named as one of the top 100 schools for cricket.
“More than 500 schools and colleges were invited to submit an entry to secure their place in the top 100. The responses have been forensically examined against an exhaustive set of criteria before the editorial panel reached their decision,” says The Cricketer Editor, Simon Hughes.
Director of Sport and Master in Charge of Cricket, Rory McCann, comments:
“We work hard and invest in our cricket programme to give the boys the best opportunity to enjoy the game. With 14 cricket teams from 9-18, we hope to give boys the opportunity to train and compete in like for like fixtures across Scotland and down south. Alongside myself, we also have Stevie Gilmour (ECB Level 3 Coach and Eastern Knights Head Coach) and Ali Evans (ECB Level 2/ Current Scotland Internationalist) working as coaches all year round. Our winter programme starts in October, running all the way through to the end of the Summer Term. Most recently we have produced county and international cricketers. Most recent Merchistonians include Tom Sole (Northamptonshire and Scotland) and Chris Sole (Hampshire and Scotland). We look forward to a fun filled summer term in 2019!”
At Merchiston, cricket is one of our three major sports. Each Summer Term, the cricket programme has a full fixture card for all of its teams. We start with Kwik cricket in J4-5, and have other teams all the way up to 1XI standard. The winter programme underpins the continued success and popularity of cricket in the School. The 1XI and U15 XI regularly have both international and local tours. The 1XI completed a very successful tour to Sri Lanka at Easter 2017.
The 1XI competes in, and has had great success in the Scottish Schools Competitions. There are two further Senior XIs, and two teams in each year group up to the U15 XI, making 12 teams in all. The 1XI were runners up in this year’s U18 T20 Scottish Schools Cup, whilst the U15 XI have won the T20 Scottish Schools Cup for the last two years.
